Log On and Learn a Language at the touch of your fingertips
(11/1/2009) with the use of your New Haven Free Public Library Card! Thanks to an online learning system called BYKI (Before You Know It), you can learn Afrikaans to Zulu at your own pace and own place. BYKI, a product of Transparent Language, offers 73 languages and is used by government language schools like the Foreign Service Institute and the Defense Language Institute.
Using flash cards to teach sets of words and phrases, BYKI periodically prompts you to recall phrases you’ve already learned so you won’t learn and then forget. You can analyze your pronunciation and take dictation in addition to taking multiple choice tests. You can follow BYKI through Facebook or twitter and get daily updates that help with learning the language you’ve picked.
If you'd like more information on BYKI, follow the information link that appears below. When you are ready to set up your own BYKI account, visit one of our New Haven Library Branches where you can choose a username and password. Once you have an account, you can track your progress from any computer with internet access. "Before You Know It" you’ll be fluent in any language you choose!
